About the day job...

Here's a different sort of party game for you.

If you were a vicar, what kind of vicar would you be?

Man-crazy, chocoholic Vicar of Dibley? Dotty Dad's Army reverend? Trendy socially aware crusader from Casualty, who you just know is going to end up dying or losing his (or her) faith?

Well, the kind of vicar I am, is the kind who thinks God is the greatest thing since well, forever, and the life God gives us is the greatest gift. You can't ever enjoy it as much as it deserves. The trouble is, Christians and the Church haven't always had a very good record of believing this or showing that they believed it. Some of the time you'd think they didn't think much of God, or of life. No wonder so many people have been turned off the whole idea of religion. I'd like to turn them back on by reminding them of the Story of Jesus. There was a man who knew how to live, and people flocked to him because they could see it, too. I'd like us to be more like that.

So, that's the day job that I'm not giving up to become a professional storyteller just yet. Believe it or not, there's better money in vicaring.

I'm also really proud of the great parishes I'm Vicar of. I fell in love with Marston when I first saw it in 1990, and nothing has happened since then to change my mind. And when I took responsibility for Elsfield too in 1994, it was another joy.
